Shade Sail Posts / Poles : A critical Part of Any Shade Sail Installation.

Shade sail posts and poles are the unsung heroes of any outdoor shade solution. These sturdy structures provide the essential support for your shade sail, ensuring it remains secure and functional in various weather conditions. Choosing the right posts and poles is crucial for the longevity and effectiveness of your shade sail.

Types of Shade Sail Posts/Poles

Several materials are commonly used for shade sail posts and poles, each with its own set of advantages and disadvantages:

  • Galvanised Steel Shade Sail Posts: Known for its durability and strength galvanised steel posts are often the best choice for shade sail posts. They come in a variety of sizes and thicknesses. In square hollow section (SHS) a typical residential shade sail will required a 100x100mm post or 139mm diameter round post (also referred to as 125nb pipe).
  • Stainless Steel Shade Sail Posts: Stainless steel offers greater corrosion resistance than galvanised steel but is significantly more expensive. Stainless steel is often only available in thinner wall thickness and therefore not suitable for large sails or tall posts. For high end project in highly corrosive environments stainless steel is and option. Please contact us for further information below.
  • Wood Shade Sail Posts: Offering a natural aesthetic, wooden posts can add warmth to your outdoor space. However, they are often not the best choice for shade sail posts due to the potential for wood to rot overtime posing a safety risk to the sail. Anther factor to consider when choosing timber posts is the size of posts required, a typical residential sail will require 200mm + diameter timber post. Due to the relative lack of strength compared to steel posts timber posts will often require bracing or cable supports.
  • Aluminium Shade Sail Post: Aluminium provides high corrosion resistance but has a lower strength than mild / galvanised steel posts. Aluminium is becoming increasingly popular for framed patio shade sails which allow for the integration of other outdoor weather protection including louvered roof’s and blinds.

Shade Sail Post Footings : The Hidden Part of A Quality Shade Sail Installation.

    Footings for Shade sails

The simplest method for post installation is to directly embed the posts into a concrete footing. Note:

    • Concrete should be high strength 25mpa+
    • Concrete needs to be thoroughly mixed prior to pouring around post
    • Footings need to be founded into firm ground
    • Posts should be leaning back 3-5% for the direction of pull from the sail

The table below gives and indication for the footing size required based on the height of the post. Note that consideration should also be given to the size of the sail.
